Sheridan Museum of History

Make History Matter

Mission Statement
Our mission is to protect, preserve and share the history of Sheridan and the surrounding area.  Our permanent collection has grown to 3000 artifacts that span the 19th and 20th centuries and our research area contains family histories, genealogies, photos, archival material, bound collection of the local newspapers and books that are all available for everyone to use.

The creation of the Sheridan Museum of History

A group of local historians met in October of 2005 to put together a display for the celebration of the City of Sheridan’s 125th birthday.  A permanent organization was formed shortly thereafter with Jane Hensley as President.

All the while, we continued to look for a building that we could share this collection with the residents and visitors to Sheridan.  In 2012, Lucy Hebert, offered us a building to use as a temporary location.  This was sure to give us the opportunity to see if the residents were interested in having a local museum.  We continued to collect donated items and the interests, in the museum, was more than positive but try as we might, we could not find a permanent location.  By 2013, we were established as a 501(c)(3) non-for-profit corporation which allowed us to look at applying for some grants to help us out.

In December of 2016, the Sackett Building became available but it was in need of some renovation.  One of our members stepped up and secured the building on our behalf and the renovation work began.  It took us all of 2017 to raise the money and complete the renovation of the building.  We were able to move the collection on the 7th of January 2018.  It took all of January to unpack and set up the collection and we opened to the public on the 17th of February.  The building is also being used as a community/senior center for many local organizations.   We are now in the process of raising the money to purchase this property by March of 2019.

This is only the beginning of our story as it is our goal to “Make History Matter” for Sheridan residents and visitors for a very long time.
